How to write a CV for a teaching job

A teacher CV is one of the most scrutinised documents in recruitment — schools receive dozens of applications and shortlist on the strength of the CV and supporting letter before any interview. Here's how to get yours right.

What schools look for in a teacher CV

Headteachers and HR managers in schools are looking for clear evidence of:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
• Subject specialism and age range experience
• Examination results data — particularly at GCSE and A-level
• Contribution beyond the classroom (pastoral, extracurricular, leadership)
• Safeguarding awareness
• Continuing professional development

Essential sections for a teacher CV

1. Personal statement (4–5 lines)

Include your teaching philosophy, subject specialism, phase (primary/secondary/further ed), and what you'd bring to this specific school. Be specific about year groups and subjects.

2. Teaching experience

For each post, include: school name and type, dates, year groups and subjects taught, class sizes, any examination results you can share, and any additional responsibilities (form tutor, intervention lead, cover supervisor etc.).

3. Qualifications

List your degree (subject and class), PGCE or equivalent, QTS confirmation, and any further qualifications (MEd, NPQ, safeguarding training, first aid).

4. Safeguarding

All teacher CVs should explicitly reference safeguarding awareness. A one-line note such as "Enhanced DBS (updated [date]) and current safeguarding training" gives schools immediate reassurance.

5. Extracurricular and pastoral

Schools want rounded colleagues. List sports teams coached, clubs run, trips led, house roles, charity events organised. These signal commitment and engagement beyond contracted hours.

Length

Two pages is standard for experienced teachers. New teachers (NQTs/ECTs) should aim for one. Never go beyond two pages regardless of experience.

Supporting letter (personal statement)

Most teaching applications require both a CV and a supporting letter (often called a personal statement or letter of application). The letter addresses the person specification directly and tends to carry as much weight as the CV. Treat both with equal rigour.
