How to write a CV with no work experience
Having no work experience doesn't mean having nothing to show. Every recruiter who reviews a junior application knows they're looking at a beginner — what they're really assessing is potential, attitude and how well you present yourself.
Why a no-experience CV is different
A traditional CV puts work history front and centre. When you're starting out, you need to reorder your priorities: lead with education, skills and any practical projects that demonstrate your abilities.
Recruiters don't expect experience from a junior candidate. They're looking for enthusiasm, transferable skills and evidence that you can learn quickly.
Structure your CV for maximum impact
1. Personal statement (don't skip this)
This is your 3-4 line pitch at the top of the CV. State who you are, what you've studied and what kind of role you're targeting. Be specific — a vague personal statement reads as filler.
Example: "Recent Computer Science graduate from the University of Manchester with a strong foundation in Python and web development. Seeking a junior developer role where I can contribute to real-world projects and grow within an experienced team."
2. Education — move it up
With no work history, your academic record is your main credential. Include your degree and grade (if strong), relevant modules, your dissertation topic if applicable, and any academic awards.
3. Skills — be specific, not generic
List both technical skills (software, tools, languages) and transferable skills (communication, project management). Avoid vague phrases like "good communicator" — back them up with context.
4. Alternative experience — this matters more than you think
- Internships and placements: Even a two-week placement is worth including.
- Volunteering: Shows initiative and values.
- University projects: Group projects, dissertations, competitions.
- Personal projects: A blog, an app, a YouTube channel, freelance work.
- Part-time or casual work: Retail, tutoring, babysitting — all show reliability.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending the same generic CV to every job — always tailor it.
- Leaving sections blank — if you have nothing to say, remove the section entirely.
- Going over one page — for a no-experience CV, one page is ideal.
- Using an unprofessional email address.
- Not proofreading — spelling errors signal carelessness.
Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems to filter CVs before a human reads them. Read the job description carefully and include relevant keywords in your CV — skills, tools and qualifications mentioned in the advert.
