What to do if you are fired

๐Ÿ“… July 2025  ยท  โฑ 5 min read  ยท  ProfesionalDocuments.com

Being dismissed from a job is one of the most destabilising work experiences there is. It's also something millions of people go through every year. Here's what to do, in order, starting from today.

First: take a breath

The immediate aftermath of a dismissal is not the time to send emails, make calls or post on social media. Give yourself at least 24 hours before taking any significant action. Decisions made in the immediate emotional aftermath are rarely the best ones.

Understand what type of dismissal you've experienced

This matters for your legal rights:

What you're owed

Was it unfair dismissal?

If you have at least 2 years' continuous employment, you have the right not to be unfairly dismissed. Potentially unfair reasons include: dismissal without proper process, discriminatory dismissal, dismissal for whistleblowing or exercising a legal right. Contact ACAS (acas.org.uk) โ€” the time limit to claim is 3 months minus 1 day from the dismissal date.

๐Ÿ’ก Get everything in writing. Ask your employer to confirm the reason for dismissal, the date, and your final pay details in writing. This is important if you later decide to challenge it.

Practical next steps

  1. Claim Universal Credit or New Style JSA promptly โ€” payments don't backdate
  2. Update your CV while the details of your role are fresh
  3. Contact ACAS if you believe the dismissal was unfair
  4. Consider who can provide a reference from this employer โ€” HR contacts can sometimes provide a basic factual reference even after a difficult departure
  5. Don't badmouth the employer on social media or to contacts โ€” your next employer will hear about it

What to say in future interviews

You will be asked. Prepare a calm, honest and brief answer: "I was let go following a disagreement over [general area] โ€” it was a difficult situation but I've learned from it and I'm very focused on [what you want to do next]." Specifics invite follow-up questions. General honesty closes the topic.
