How to write a cover letter for an apprenticeship
Apprenticeship cover letters are different from standard job applications โ you're applying to learn, not just to work. Employers know you're at the start of your career. What they're evaluating is potential, enthusiasm and fit.
What apprenticeship employers look for
Unlike a regular job, the employer knows you won't have experience in the role โ that's the whole point of an apprenticeship. They're looking for:
- Genuine enthusiasm for the industry or company
- Evidence you understand what the role involves โ have you researched it?
- Transferable skills from school, volunteering, hobbies or part-time work
- Commitment to learning โ apprenticeships are long-term; they want someone who'll stay
- Basic professionalism โ punctuality, communication, reliability
Structure for an apprenticeship cover letter
Paragraph 1 โ What you're applying for and why this company
Name the apprenticeship and the company. Mention something specific about why you're interested in them โ a product, a project, their reputation, something in the news. This shows initiative.
Paragraph 2 โ Your relevant skills and experience
Draw on school projects, part-time work, volunteering, hobbies or personal projects. For technical apprenticeships, mention any self-taught skills, courses or certifications. For business apprenticeships, emphasise communication, organisation and customer interaction.
Paragraph 3 โ Why an apprenticeship (not just university or a job)
Employers value candidates who have consciously chosen the apprenticeship route. "I want to earn while I learn and develop practical skills alongside my studies" is a genuine, credible answer โ and stronger than saying nothing about your choice.
Paragraph 4 โ Close
Express availability for interview and thank them. Keep it brief.
