How to write a cover letter for an NHS job

๐Ÿ“… June 2025  ยท  โฑ 5 min read  ยท  ProfesionalDocuments.com

Applying for a job in the NHS is different from most private sector applications. The NHS recruits against specific values and a detailed person specification โ€” and your cover letter needs to reflect both.

Understand the NHS recruitment framework

NHS jobs are advertised on NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) and each listing includes a detailed Job Description and Person Specification. Your cover letter must address the person spec directly โ€” recruiters score applications against it. If a criterion is listed as "essential", you need to demonstrate you meet it.

NHS values โ€” know them

The NHS Constitution sets out six core values. Weaving relevant ones into your letter signals genuine alignment:

๐Ÿ’ก Don't just list the values โ€” demonstrate them. "I am compassionate" is weak. "During my placement at [X], I supported a patient through a difficult diagnosis by..." is evidence.

Structure your NHS cover letter

Paragraph 1 โ€” Why this role and this trust

State the role and band you're applying for. Explain why this specific trust or department attracts you โ€” it shows you've researched them specifically, not just applied everywhere.

โœ“ Opening example
"I am writing to apply for the Band 5 Staff Nurse position on the Cardiology ward at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Having completed my pre-registration placement at the Trust last year, I have direct experience of your commitment to patient-centred care and would be proud to join the team permanently."

Paragraph 2 โ€” Address the essential criteria

Work through the person specification's essential criteria. Don't copy them verbatim โ€” give a brief example for each that proves you meet it. Use the STAR structure: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Paragraph 3 โ€” Demonstrate NHS values in practice

Give a specific example from your experience that demonstrates one or two NHS values. This is where most applicants either win or lose the shortlist.

Paragraph 4 โ€” Close

Express availability for interview, confirm any registration status (NMC, HCPC etc.) and thank them for their consideration.
