How to write a CV for a care worker job
Care work is one of the most in-demand sectors in the UK โ and one where genuine values and attitude often count for more than qualifications. Here's how to write a CV that shows you have both.
What care employers look for
Care sector employers are hiring for qualities that can't always be taught:
- Compassion and patience โ evidenced through examples, not just claimed
- Reliability and punctuality โ critical in a sector where someone depends on you showing up
- Communication skills โ with service users, families and multidisciplinary teams
- Safeguarding awareness
- DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check status
- Manual handling training
- Any relevant qualifications: NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care, First Aid
Personal statement โ lead with values
โ Example
"Compassionate and dedicated care assistant with 3 years' experience supporting elderly residents in a residential care setting. Hold a current enhanced DBS, manual handling certificate and NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care. Committed to person-centred care and supporting residents to maintain independence and dignity."
If you have no formal care experience
Informal caring experience counts. If you've cared for a family member, volunteered at a hospice, worked with vulnerable young people, or supported someone with a disability in any capacity โ include it. Frame it professionally.
โ Example โ informal care experience
Family Carer | 2021 โ 2023

Key skills to list
- Personal care (washing, dressing, continence support)
- Medication administration (if trained)
- Moving and handling
- Dementia awareness / mental health awareness
- Care planning and record keeping
- Safeguarding and duty of care
- Driving licence (if applicable โ very useful in domiciliary care)
๐ก Mention your DBS status. Stating "Enhanced DBS (current, registered on the Update Service)" removes a common barrier in the hiring process. If yours is expired, apply to renew before applying for roles โ it can take 2โ8 weeks.
Availability matters in care
Most care roles require weekend and bank holiday availability. State your shift availability clearly in your personal statement โ it's often the first filter.
