How to write a CV with no formal qualifications

๐Ÿ“… July 2025  ยท  โฑ 5 min read  ยท  ProfesionalDocuments.com

Not having formal qualifications is not the barrier it once was. Many employers โ€” particularly in trades, retail, logistics, hospitality and the gig economy โ€” prioritise experience, attitude and reliability over certificates. Here's how to build a CV that leads with your strengths.

Shift the focus to what you have

A CV without qualifications doesn't need to apologise โ€” it needs to lead with something else. That something else is usually one or more of:

Lead with a strong personal statement

โœ“ Example โ€” no qualifications but good experience
"Reliable and hardworking kitchen assistant with 4 years' experience in high-volume restaurant environments. Food hygiene Level 2 certified. Known for consistent performance under pressure and a strong team work ethic. Available immediately for full-time or part-time work."

Use a skills-based CV structure

Rather than leading with education (which may be minimal), lead with skills and experience. Structure:

  1. Personal statement
  2. Key skills
  3. Work experience (in reverse chronological order)
  4. Training / certifications (even short ones count)
  5. Education (brief โ€” school name and any grades you have)

Every bit of training counts

Have you done any of the following? They all belong on your CV:

๐Ÿ’ก Don't leave the education section blank. List your school and the years you attended, even without grades. A completely empty education section looks more unusual than modest results.

Upskilling options

If you have time before applying, free or low-cost short courses can strengthen your CV significantly. The National Careers Service (nationalcareers.service.gov.uk) offers free guidance and access to funded training in many areas. Many councils also offer free ESOL and numeracy/literacy courses.
